Indian Dinner: Saffron!
Details
I've said it before and I'll say it again... St Louis has some amazing restaurants for a metropolitan area of our size. And nowhere is this more apparent than in the selection of great Indian restaurants! It's been several months since we had an Indian dinner, and seven years since we visited Saffron, which is my favorite Indian restaurant in the region. So I decided it's time for a return visit!
Cuisine - Saffron is a traditional Indian restaurant, so the menu entrees offer a broad cross-section of chicken, lamb, shrimp, fish, and even goat dishes for the adventurous, as well as a huge selection of vegetarian dishes as well; in fact, both the appetizer and entree sections of the menu are divided between vegetarian and meat. So carnivore or not, you'll be in heaven here... as will bread lovers, as the variety of naan and other breads is amazing! Of course, the best thing about a huge variety of food is when it's utterly delicious! Saffron goes to great lengths to make sure the spices and flavorings are just right, and will gladly adjust the "heat" of spicy dishes to your preference. Speaking for myself, their meat (chicken) samosa is absolutely the best I've ever tasted! The Peshwari naan was almost like dessert, since it's stuffed with a paste of cherry, cashew, almonds, raisins, and coconut! Probably my favorite Indian dish is korma (a cashew nut cream sauce), available here in chicken and lamb versions, and absolutely to die for, but then, their tikka masala (tomato-cream sauce) is worth writing home about too! On my last visit I tried the shrimp malabar (ginger and coconut curry with tomato) and I might have a new favorite! Really, bottom line, everything I've ever tried on the menu has been outstanding and whatever you choose you can expect it to be awesome!!
Price - For all this, the prices are extremely reasonable. Appetizers, soups, salads, breads, and desserts all range from $2.50 to $10. THe entire entree menu is in the teens, mostly the mid teens, with just two huge platters breaking $20. It's hard to beat great food at these prices!
Additional Info - The restaurant is at the northwest corner of Manchester and Barrett Station, about two miles west of I-270, in a small strip center (but it faces east, so you can't see it readily from Manchester). It's behind a Together credit union, and across Manchester from White Castle. Tons of free parking right in front of the restaurant. Note that if you're going east on Manchester, you have to turn RIGHT onto a small loop road in order to turn LEFT on Barrett Station to get to the restaurant!
I'll be looking forward to seeing lots of my west county foodies at Saffron on Thursday, November 9th!
