Talks
Paul Bailey - "Innovate Better, with less"
Since the pandemic, advances in AI, data, cloud technology, and rising customer expectations have accelerated innovation and digital transformation. Established organisations in healthcare, finance, retail, and even higher education are facing disruption from new products and services that threaten to challenge their very existence. In a climate where start-ups can scale quicker and easier than ever before, how do you innovate, whilst minimising risk and reducing time to value?
In this session, I’ll provide practical insights from our work at the UK’s largest independent IT consultancy. I’ll share a simple formula for innovation and explain:

  • What is wrong with a ‘product focus’
  • Why we need less big ideas and more cheap experiments
  • How to not only build the thing right, but also build the right thing

Most importantly, I'll explain why good innovation is as little innovation as possible and why we should all be aiming to innovate better with less.

Paul Bailey is Head of Design for SPARCK the Product, Design and Innovation capability of BJSS the largest independent IT consultancy in the UK. He’s been designing digital products and services for over 25 years. Creating solutions for some of the UK’s largest organisations and government departments. He’s host of ‘Service Designers Connect’, a self-confessed Typothermiac and a bit of a geek. When not thinking about design, he spends his time coming up with ingenious ways to entertain his four kids – whilst robot proofing them for the 4th industrial revolution. Tanvi Vats - talk title will be confirmed here soon
Tanvi is a user research assistant at Horizon DER, a leading digital transformation lab at the University of Nottingham and a recent HCI graduate. She's skilled in mixed methods research, with a skewed interest in qualitative research and is particularly interested in tackling socio-technical problems. She has dabbled in content writing, public policy, technology research and filmmaking in the past and has finally found her footing in working towards understanding people, technology, and everything in between. Outside of work, she enjoys practicing yoga, running, and reading books. She's currently reading 'Hello World: How To Be Human in a Machine World' by Hannah Fry.
