Discover Lisbon: Walking Tours & The Lisbon Pubcrawl

Alfama is not only one of the oldest and most picturesque neighborhoods in Lisbon, but it was also one of the only neighborhoods that was not destroyed in the 1755 earthquake.

And so, the city still maintained its familiar charm. In fact, this neighborhood’s nickname comes from the Arabic ‘Al-hamma’ which means ‘hot springs’ or ‘baths’. Decorated with beautiful tiles, this neighborhood's steep, winding alleys give way to stunning views over a sea of terracotta roofs and the Tagus River. The aromas of traditional Portuguese cuisine, the echoes of fado and the conversation of elderly Portuguese people make this neighborhood one of the most authentic in Lisbon!

Our tour starts in Rossio and passes through some key areas before heading to the heart of Alfama, where you will also stop at Miradouro Portas do Sol, before ending the tour at the cathedral.

Discover Lisbon with our free walking tours, based on your contributions. Pay what you think it's worth – we trust you will find the experience valuable, with most guests typically contributing 10-20€. You evaluate the experience!

Your journey begins in the heart of Lisbon at Praça dos Restauradores. From there, your local guide will lead you through some of the city's most fascinating landmarks, starting with Rossio Square, before taking you into the winding streets of Alfama.
As you explore, your guide will bring Lisbon's history to life through fascinating stories about the city's past, its people, traditions and legends.
You'll visit the area around the Sé Cathedral, hear the story of Saint Anthony, explore the maze-like streets of Alfama and learn about the neighbourhood's connection to Fado and the Portuguese idea of saudade.
And because exploring Lisbon works up an appetite, you'll also enjoy a traditional Pastel de Nata included in your experience. For those who would like to try something a little stronger, there is also an optional stop for a Ginjinha, Lisbon's famous sour-cherry liqueur. Please note that the Ginjinha tasting is not included in the tour price.
Your journey continues to the beautiful Miradouro de Santa Luzia, where you'll have a chance to take in the views over Alfama. Finally, you'll arrive at Miradouro das Portas do Sol, where your guide will bring the story of Alfama full circle.
