NEW WALK FOR 2024

Cheapside, a modern shopping street in the heart of the City of London, runs from St Paul's Cathedral eastwards to Bank. It dates back to the 12th century as London's oldest high street. Cheap (or chepe) is an old English word meaning 'market'. The streets leading off Cheapside were named after the speciality items they sold.

Cheapside was also an important street for trade guilds, meetings and demonstrations with one of the area's most important churches. The area has a fascinating history along with some famous residents.

During the afternoon we'll discover: the bird boilers; the birthplace of a 'household' name; an Elizabethan treasure hoard; a place for 'reflection'; the 13th century Eleanor Cross. All this and much more.

This is a circular walk so we will finish near Cannon Street with a pub visit at the end for those who wish to go.

If this is your first time on Meetup or with this group, you will be made very welcome. So please join me for this guided walk in a friendly group.
