Before it was the gentrified Rosemary District, the area was known as Overtown, the first black community in Sarasota. This 1.5 mile walk will cover Central Ave., between 4th and 10th St., the heart of the original neighborhood.

The tour begins with a short discussion of the history of the neighborhood. The walk then starts on the east side of Central and returns on the west side while also investigating some side streets. The emphasis will be on commercial property as very few homes remain.

Rosemary Cemetery, first platted in 1885, will be our turn around point. I'll provide a little of its history then we'll walk the cemetery where notable early Sarasotans burial will be identified followed by a brief description of each person's contribution to Sarasota history.

Sadly, most of the original buildings have been demolished with more to come, so if you're interested, you'd better sign up fast while a little bit of the history remains.

PARKING: There might be parking on Central. If not, check the side streets. Selby Library at 1331 1st St. has parking also.

SEASONAL POLICY: If you sign up, then sign out, you must do so 36 hours before the event or it'll be counted as a No Show.
