This is a three mile walk that looks at the history of City Island and then crosses the highway to enter Lido Shores and learn about the Sarasota School of Architecture (architecturesarasota.org). Arrive a few minutes early as I plan to start at 8:30 am sharp.

After a brief history of the island, we'll visit some of the following locations: mangrove boardwalk, Sarasota Sailing Squadron, Save Our Seabirds, Mote Marine Laboratory, The Outboard Motor Club and The Sarasota Ski- A-Rees.

Crossing the highway, we'll discuss the New Pass Bridge history, John Ringling's failed attempts to build a luxury hotel on Longboat Key and local builder Phillip Hiss and then we'll walk through his Lido Shores development to observe what remains of The Sarasota School of Architecture buildings there.

You Tube has videos on The Ski-A-Rees and there's a short video called Ghost Hotel of Longboat Key about Ringling's luxury hotel. The video is better than any photos I can show you, though I might be able to find a few.

BRING: Sturdy walking shoes and water. This is a pretty long walk so be prepared.
