EXPERIMENTATION AT SCALE - Robin Cox

It’s crucial that everyone at Disney Streaming is able to make data driven decisions. We’re running experiments all the time to determine whether that new feature or improvement is really going to make it easier to find what you want to watch, improve the video startup time or increase sign ups. Our experimentation platform needs to assign users to different experiments in real-time and, because it’s real-time, it needs to be fast, available and comfortably handle billions of requests every week.

In January, we launched a new set of services for performing this important task that consistently achieves a response time of under 10ms at the 99.99th percentile for more than 200 million requests every day. In this talk we will explore the architecture that enables such latencies at Disney scale and the key design decisions made during development that made it all possible.

EFFECTFUL PROGRAMMING IN THE SUBSCRIPTION DOMAIN - Marianne Pearson

The subscription service is critical to ensure the user is able to access the content they are entitled to. It is essential that we can continue to grow subscribers while maintaining reliability and low latency. Luckily we can use some of the benefits of functional programming using Scala to help us out.

In this talk I will describe how we harness Scala effect libraries (specifically ZIO) to tackle some of the many challenges we face building and maintaining the subscription service.
