The Metaverse: ‘Future of the Future’ or ‘Flaming Bag’?

Details
The Metaverse is the future of future technology. A world where we all live in virtual reality and through artificial intelligence.
In this Disruptive Technologists' Webinar, we speak with Esther Dyson on the Metaverse and its governance issues. More specifically, as the founding chair of ICANN Esther has thoughts about "how effectively decentralized governance *actually* works. Would you like to be governed by Mark Zuckerberg? Vladimir Putin? Elon Musk?"
Matthew Ball, a venture capitalist who has written extensively about the topic, said the metaverse represented the fourth wave to computers, following mainframe computing, personal computing and mobile computing.
“It’s moving into what people call ambient computing. It’s about being within the computer rather than accessing the computer. It’s about being always online rather than always having access to an online world.”
Meta Roasted
On Vox’s Pivot podcast with Kara Swisher, renowned NYU marketing professor Scott Galloway laid the cards on the table. While he gave Zuckerberg credit for being a “visionary” who’s doing the right things to try and pivot a sinking ship — aka Meta-formerly-known-as-Facebook, which is now losing active users for the first time ever — he’s not convinced that its version of the Metaverse is headed in the right direction:
“If he pulls it off, it’ll be one of the most impressive feats in — not even corporate renewal — but vision around maintaining growth,” Galloway said during the podcast. “I don’t think they’re going to. I think this thing is already a giant flaming bag of s***”
MEET THE PANELISTS:
- Esther Dyson (@edyson on twitter) is the executive founder of Wellville, a 10-year nonprofit project (2015-2024) focused on helping five small US communities to increase equitable well-being - and to serve as models for others. She is also a noted angel investor, focusing on IT/Internet, policy, health, logistics, insurance, space travel and other interesting areas. Among many other roles, she served as founding chairman of ICANN, one of the first Internet governance organizations, from 1998 to 2000, and remained on its board for a few years thereafter, focused on the “At-Large” community - i.e. the user base rather than the organizations for whom ICANN is a source of revenue or potential control.
- Graham Morehead is the Principal Research Scientist at AON & Adjunct Professor at Gonzaga University. He has been on the cutting edge of technologies in a wide array of disciplines, from high-energy physics to complex adaptive systems and automatic translation.
