Master the Maze of Formatting and Style Compliance

Details

This workshop will keep you on top of ways to meet the formatting and style compliance challenges. Getting an early start on meeting these challenges will save time, anguish, and perhaps eliminate or minimize the need to engage an editor. Even with your intellectual and creative accomplishments, as well as your committee’s advice, you still have a chunk of work to do before your document is ready for publication. This work takes time and requires focused attention. Many authors get this shock just when they are more than ready to be finished and need to devote time and energy to other activities.

Shortcuts are shared to bring your document into compliance with the required style standards. Three handouts include a section-by-section checklist; a list of variations from style standards appropriate to dissertations; and time-saving online resources. Issues discussed include handling of verb tenses, documentation of qualitative data, and the need to establish internal-document standards. Word processing issues include page number placement, transition from front section Roman numerals to main section Arabic numbers, table of contents formatting, and heading/footer issues. We will emphasize issues and questions of greatest interest to our workshop attendees.

This is an expert-led workshop. Marilyn Tullius has edited more than 70 dissertations. During that time she has successfully addressed the spectrum of problems. This work has provided insights into the needs of academic authors and strategies/tips they can apply to manage their projects more efficiently.
