Come to our monthly meeting and be ready to discuss topics related to race relations, and more within our community, and our country as a whole!
Join us for a timely and eye-opening conversation about the persistence of the Model Minority Myth (operating alongside the myth of the Perpetual Foreigner)—and the profound impact it has on AAPI communities and broader racial justice efforts. This myth, which portrays Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders as quiet, high-achieving, and self-reliant, not only erases the complexity of AAPI identities but also perpetuates harmful anti-Blackness and wedges between communities of color.
Who are we really talking about when we say “AAPI”? With over 22 million Asian Americans representing nearly 50 ethnicities and more than 100 languages, the AAPI umbrella covers a vast, nuanced landscape of histories and lived experiences—many of which remain invisible in classrooms, media, and public discourse.
We’ll explore:
What the Model Minority Myth is and why it persists
How it silences AAPI struggles, including poverty, deportation, and underrepresentation
The ongoing absence of AAPI history in public education
Activists and stories you may not know: Grace Lee Boggs, Vincent Chin, Yuri Kochiyama, Larry Itliong, the May 19th Project, and more
How collective identity is formed across diverse AAPI experiences
Let’s dismantle the myths and make room for fuller truths. This discussion is open to all—whether you're AAPI, a student, an educator, an activist, or just curious to learn.
Diversity in Action welcomes everyone regardless of race, religious affiliation, ethnic background, age, gender, or economic status.
