Local Event: Abuse and Healing in the Church

Details

As in the past, I'll be posting local events that fit within the meet-ups stated areas of interest. This event is NOT affiliated with our meet-up group; it is hosted by a local church, Grace DC. Details of the event are below.

***
Sadly, many people come to church bearing emotional and spiritual scars from past or present abuse received from those in power over them--parents, spouses, bosses, church leaders, etc. Physical, verbal, sexual, and emotional abuse are much more common in the church than we would like to think. How do we care well for people who have experienced abuse? And how do we do everything in our power to ensure that our churches are a refuge for those who need “shelter from the storm” (Isaiah 32:2)? This conference is designed to equip the church to more fully protect and serve those in their midst.

Often we are well-meaning but clumsy in our efforts to come alongside vulnerable people and ill-equipped to lead abusers to repentance. Sometimes our “care” adds an extra layer of suffering onto already painful circumstances. This conference is for those who earnestly desire to grow in wisdom and insight in these matters, so as to more effectively build up those who have been sinned against and bind up their wounds.

SPEAKER
Diane Langberg, PhD, is globally recognized for her work with trauma victims. She has trained caregivers the world over in responding to trauma and to the abuse of power.
