Dueling Hikes - Signal Knob (Easy Corgi Group) Strasburg Reservoir Rout

Details

Stealing an idea from another group. We will do a dueling hike to allow different ability levels to reach the top to luxuriate over the views of Strasburg. I will be in this easier group with my two senior corgis going at a snail’s pace. Do not feel you have to stay with me if you hike much faster than we do! If you do not like dogs do NOT chose this option.

For those wanting to bring dogs here are the rules:
Dogs must be over 16 weeks and fully vaccinated
Dogs must be non-reactive and friendly to humans and other animals
Dogs must be capable of doing this hike (do not bring a dog that has never hiked before or has no recall or has been recently injured)
Most importantly, there will be corgis. If your dog can't handle corgis this is not the hike for you to bring your dog!
(NO EXCEPTIONS TO DOG RULES!!!)

The Strasburg Reservoir Route begins at the gate on Forest Road 66 (Approximately at 38°55'21.9"N 78°22'48.0"W) and follows Forestry Road 66 all the way to the peak of Signal Knob. There are about 6-10 parking spots to this lot but you can park along the road as long as you don't block or make it impossible for people to exit the lot. This is the easy version as we will go at a gradual incline along a fire road for under 8 miles total. You come back exactly the way you came and we do not cross other trails that could confuse you. This version has 900 ft of elevation gain and the worst of it is right before you take on the summit on an easy wide fire road. Absolutely no hard switchbacks and the ground is nice and soft for little paws. For normal pace people estimate the hike to take about 5-6 hours with summit lunch break. If you go at my pace and want to take lots of pictures add an extra hour.

Since we are in drought conditions you must bring water as most streams will be completely dry and there is not a good way to reach the reservoir pond. If we time it right you should meet up with the harder group at the radio tower around lunch time. Please plan take a lunch break from 12-1 at the radio tower overlook. The intent is not to race but to meet up at roughly the same time at the overlook.
