Anticapitalist Writing Workshop: Decolonizing and Indigenizing
Details
After The Storm is partnering with our community member poeta.aymara for a writing workshop on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, from 6:30-8:30pm (location in NW DC, to be shared with attendees closer to the date).
Decolonizing and Indigenizing
How might we begin to challenge colonial perspectives in our writing, and in the form of writing itself? What are some storytelling practices our community can share as we move towards indigenization? Join your comrades for this workshop on decolonizing and indigenizing writing and language to explore what answers to these questions can look like! Come as you are—no prior experience with these concepts is required to participate.
PSsst. Want to come but don't consider yourself a writer? PLEASE come. This space is for you :)
Format
This workshop is capped at 25 people to ensure everyone has space in the venue to write and move comfortably. There will be a facilitator, some individual writing time, and time to connect and story share in pairs and groups. We will also include physical movement exploration and oral storytelling.
If you sign up but can no longer attend, please cancel so your spot can go to someone else. Once this event reaches capacity, a waitlist will open automatically.
Event Policy
After The Storm events are all-inclusive spaces for folks to meet new people, socialize, and support each other with care and curiosity. This particular event is open to the public. If any member is made to feel uncomfortable by someone else in attendance, please approach After The Storm and we will have a conversation with them. If appropriate, we will ask them to leave. We do not tolerate any kind of harassment or abuse.
Location
Thank you to Wangari Gardens for hosting us! A few considerations for the location:
- The nearest public bathroom is the private business Aurora Market (500 Irving St NW), which is usually accommodating.
- The closest street parking is on Park Place NW, which has a 2-hour limit until 8:30pm for those without a residential parking permit.
- We will have battery-operated lighting and some picnic blankets for seating. We will also have writing materials like pen and notebooks.
- There is one set of terraced steps with a railing leading from the sidewalk down a hill on Hobart Place NW. The garden otherwise has uneven gravel, woodchip, and mowed surfaces.
If you have your own preferred writing utensils, please bring them along with water, snacks, and optionally your seating of choice (e.g. blanket, camp chair, cushion)!
