About us
I've been through loss, change and grief just like the rest of us. The kind that knocks you sideways and leaves you wondering who you even are anymore.
And here's what I discovered after two years of 'doing it afraid': journaling helped, but it took forever. What actually moved the needle, what actually got me back to myself, to my inner child, was playing and trying new things I've always wanted to try but never did. It was whitewater. It was camping alone under the stars. It was kayaking down a river that scared the heck out of me. It was back to painting, cooking new foods, pottery classes, cold plunges, archery competitions as an amateur. It was river fly fishing and meeting wonderful people who were present, alive, not thinking about anything else. It was volunteering with adaptive sports.
And every single time, someone would watch me do it and say, "I've always wanted to try that." And then... they wouldn't. They'd just keep saying it. Year after year. They watched me grow but they stayed working and doing the same things over and over again.
That's exactly why this group exists.
This is Do It Afraid. Because that's what loving yourself actually means. It doesn't mean waiting until the fear goes away, it doesn't mean feeling ready, it doesn't mean having it all figured out first. Loving yourself means showing up anyway. This isn't extreme adventure. This isn't about proving to yourself that you're the toughest person in the room! This is about trying the thing that scares you a little, the thing you've been putting off, so you can lose the old you out there on the trail, in the cold water, at the archery line, and turn around and say, "I ACTUALLY did that."
Who am I looking for? You. If you've been through something, a loss, a breakup, a version of your life falling apart, a rut you can't seem to climb out of, you belong here. You don't need experience. You don't need to be in shape. You just need to be done sitting on the couch overthinking your way through it, and ready to actually DO something about it.
We're starting right here in Raleigh, and we're starting with a cold plunge. After that? Hikes, whitewater kayaking, rock climbing, archery, fly fishing, glassblowing, survival skills, painting, all of it, rotating, always something new on deck. No egos here, no judgment, no "I could never do that." Just people showing up for each other, cheering each other on, and walking away a little braver every single time.
Whatever it is, know this: it's gonna scare you a little, in a good way. But it's going to change your life forever. 🩵
Stop saying "I've always wanted to try that." Come do it afraid, with us, right here in Raleigh.
Do It Afraid. Let's go.
