Info borrowed from Nelson Rocks website.) Noun-a
route with fixed ladders, cables, and bridges in order to be accessible
to climbersand walkers.
(Italian) literally ‘iron road’
Via Ferrata systems have been popular for decades in Europe, where over 300 routes are open to the public, but they are relatively new and almost entirely unheard of in North America. They involve the use of permanently installed anchor systems, which provide accessibility to those without technical rock climbing skills.
The Via Ferrata at the Nelson Rocks Outdoor Center is unique in many ways. The brainchild of Stuart Hammet, the route was constructed in 2002 by a talented team of North American climbers and riggers. This Via Ferrata was the second to be built in the United States and one of the first to be built solely by North Americans, many of whom are local Seneca Rocks climbing guides.
The route is a true work of art. A labor of love, the Via Ferrata at Nelson Rocks Outdoor Center offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity for adventurers to experience true mountain terrain.
