OpenFaaS - Serverless Functions Made Simple: Alex Ellis (30-40 mins)
With OpenFaaS you can package anything as a serverless function - from Node.js to Golang to C#, even binaries like ffmpeg or ImageMagick on Linux or Windows. Serverless Functions or (FaaS) has been popularised by the Lambda offering from AWS, but being locked-into one provider has its limitations. Explore how functions fit into your existing applications and how this project offers true portability by targeting Docker and Kubernetes.
Alex Ellis is a Principal Developer, Docker Captain and the author of OpenFaaS. Alex started OpenFaaS in December of 2017 as a technical Proof of Concept which went on to win the Dockercon Cool Hacks contest and presented to 5k people. The project is gaining global traction having been awarded InfoWorld’s Best Cloud Computing Software 2017 and reaching over 7k stars on GitHub. Discover how to get involved in the thriving Open-Source community which is a key part of the project’s attraction.
Operational Simplicity with Nomad and OpenFaaS: Nic Jackson (15-20min)
Serverless computing or Functions as a Service can provide an incredible cadence for application development, but operationally it can be challenging as it does not always fit into the traditional microservices model of containers deployed to schedulers.
In this talk we will look at the brand new OpenFaaS provider for Nomad. Nomad is designed to do one thing and one thing well, scheduling containers and we will see how this compliments OpenFaaS. We will walk through the core concepts of Nomad and the OpenFaaS provider, seeing just how easy it is to set up our cluster and start deploying functions.
Nic Jackson is a developer advocate and polyglot programmer working for HashiCorp, and the author of "Building Microservices in Go" a book which examines the best patterns and practices for building microservices with the Go programming language. In his spare time, Nic coaches and mentors at Coder Dojo teaches at Women Who Go and GoBridge, speaks and evangelizes good coding practice, process, and technique.
