Title: Multi-Datacenter Federation with Docker and Kubernetes

Abstract: If a single datacenter goes down, like recently at Amazon Webservices, or if you have customers distributed across the globe, a single-datacenter setup with Docker Swarm or Kubernetes will not help you to avoid downtime or serve your users as fast as you might want.

Distributing applications across multiple datacenters has always been a very difficult endeavor, requiring a lot of engineering effort which often only very large companies could afford - and even then only for their most critical applications.

The recent versions of Kubernetes try to put this capability in the reach of everyone with “Federation”. In this talk, Max Schöfmann from Container Solutions will explain the concepts around Federation, how to try it yourself, and also show a live demo seeing it in action.

Bio: Max runs Container Solutions in Switzerland, a pan-European IT consultancy specialising in the ecosystem around containers, microservices and programmable infrastructure. Before that, he was in charge of IT operations and information security at HolidayCheck, one of Europe's largest travel websites. Together with his teams distributed across Europe, he established DevOps and built HolidayChecks microservice infrastructure around Docker and Mesos. He enjoys growing engineering teams, but is deeply convinced that any good IT manager needs to get his hands dirty regularly - which he does in Go, Ruby and general tinkering with distributed systems.
