The Docker PDX and Women Who Code PDX (https://www.meetup.com/Women-Who-Code-Portland/) meetups invite you to come join us at Intel's Jones Farm campus for a talk by Steve Lasker from Microsoft and to celebrate Docker's 4th birthday!
NOTE: You will have to check in with security at the JFCC desk because we will be using one of the training rooms instead of the auditorium
Agenda:
6:00 - Welcome, networking, and food
6:30 - Steve Lasker (https://twitter.com/SteveLasker): Developing Cloud Continuum Applications in Azure with OSS Toolchains and Project Mindaro
The introduction of containers and microservice design patterns are key to unlocking the notion of cloud continuum. They enable lift & shift of existing workloads to new cloud native workloads. However, developing against cloud resources can be challenging to simulate during development making deployment error prone as emulation is replaced with production services.
In this talk, we’ll give an early view of Project Mindaro, a way to describe, develop and continually deploy cloud native applications, providing an in-cloud development experience. From the first experience, before ever committing code, developers can run and debug their code directly in Azure, while editing with their favorite editor. By developing in the cloud, in the production configured environment, developers will unlock access to cloud resources not available locally.
We hope you’ll join us to view this new effort and provide early feedback.

Steve is a Program Manager at Microsoft, focusing on the end to end development with Docker Containers.
7:15 - Docker Labs
We’re excited to celebrate Docker’s birthday by providing labs and challenges to help everyone learn Docker and welcome new members into the community. We will partner with CS schools, global language communities and local meetup groups to throw a series of events around the world. While the courses and labs are geared towards those who are new to Docker, intermediate, advanced and expert community members are invited to join these Docker Birthday celebrations as mentors to help attendees work through the materials.
Attendees will break into groups (at different tables) and participate in a lab or challenge of their choosing.
8:15 - Wrap up
Are you an advanced user? We strongly encourage Docker users of all skill levels to attend! We need a network of mentors who understand the Docker platform to answer any questions that attendees working through the courses and labs may have.
