Viewing party #21! New Years with the 8th Doctor!

"By midnight tonight this planet will be turned inside out!" This month we ring in the New Year with the only televised 8th Doctor episode ever produced. Following the end of the classic series in 1989, Doctor Who spent it's "wilderness years" primarily as a series of spin-off sci-fi novels featuring the 7th Doctor, before at last returning to our screens in 1996 as a high-budget television movie co-produced by the BBC and the Fox US network. The movie features Paul McGann as the 8th Doctor joined by a new companion, cardiologist Grace, and a new incarnation of the Master (played by Eric Roberts), trying to do... something... apparently involving an atomic clock at New Years (the plot is a bit convoluted). Conceived as a possible back-door pilot for a US (!) TV series, the movie had so-so ratings in the US but performed very well in the UK thus planting the seed that there was still an audience for Doctor Who in years to come...
