What we’re about
"A documentary film is a nonfictional motion picture intended to document some aspect of reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction or maintaining a historical record. "(source: wikipedia.org)
Reel Doc Fans is a newly created group that took over the previous one. We consist of 3 film groups in the following cities: Austin, Texas (3,200+ members), San Diego, (2,000+ members) and New York. All groups at some point were rescued from falling into oblivion. Documentaries are too important, especially these days. I believe documentary films will become even more popular in the coming years.
Reel Doc Fans NYC is devoted to supporting our film community in New York, Austin, and San Diego. In fact, one of our goals is to highlight members' work in our monthly newsletter. We have hosted many events, met many filmmakers, volunteered in the community, and helped struggling filmmakers find an audience.
We strive to adapt our mission to the needs of our members.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic, we have moved our Meet-Ups online. We are currently working on a website where we plan to highlight our members who are filmmakers and share news and events.
Meet Up's aren't free–but this group is, so if you'd like to support us. You can donate through Paypal by using the "Reeldocfans@gmail.com" email. It will go a long way to support our efforts as we group.
Thanks for your support.

This event is posted in multiple meetup groups, and on Eventbrite, as well as with members of the Community Documentary Night email list. (Message me if interested in joining the email list) Therefore, THIS RSVP LIST IS NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL BE ATTENDING THE EVENT. So even if you only see one person RSVPed in this meetup group, there will always be others in attendance from other groups. We tend to have at least 20 on average. By inviting numerous groups that increases the likelihood that those in attendance will be from varying backgrounds and beliefs. This is done purposefully to provide everyone with the opportunity to hear a wide range of perspectives.
This event is open to all who are open to all. The one thing we ask is that people allow others to get their full thought out and that any disagreement is voiced in a civil way. Click >>HERE<< to check out the Community Documentary Night website for more info or links to previously shown documentaries.
Thank you and hope to see you there!

- Special Virtual Documentary Night: But I Look Like A Lawyer [Voting Night]Link visible for attendees
**YOU MUST WATCH THE FILM ON YOUR OWN BEFORE THIS EVENT**
For this Virtual Documentary Night we have voted in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to talk about the documentary, But I Look Like A Lawyer. This film shares stories of the discrimination, stereotyping and bias experienced by members of the Pan-Asian legal community. It aims to increase intercultural awareness and competency, and to surface the complexity of the historical, socio-economic and colonial aspects of these real lived experiences. Co-Director Louisa Winn Q.C. will join us for a special guest Q&A! Again, you must watch the film before attending this event. Here is a link to where you can watch the film for free.

This is a Voting Night, which means at the end of the night we brainstorm and vote to decide as a group what we will watch the following month, so please come ready with your recommendation. The only requirement is that the film must be available to watch online for free. If you need any ideas, you can search through the Flyers Page on the Community Documentary Night website. It is full of flyers based around certain themes and each flyer is full of documentary posters, which are hyperlinked to where you watch the films for free. Something to consider is that next month is June, which is Pride Month and also Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19th. Check out the Pride Month flyer and the Juneteenth flyer if you're interested in recommending a film in honor of these holidays.
Again, you must watch the film on your own BEFORE the event. We will be meeting over Zoom, where we will break out into small discussion groups. We will do multiple rounds of small group discussion, then have a special guest Q&A, before closing out the night with a vote to decide what film we will watch the following month.
