The Dorking Caves are actually an extensive network of man-made tunnels and chambers carved into the soft Folkestone sandstone beneath Dorking, Surrey. They were historically used as wine and beer cellars, hiding places for smugglers, and venues for illicit activities like cockfighting.
Excavation:
The exact origins of the caves remain a mystery, though historians largely attribute their creation to the 17th century. Some historians believe the tunnels were initially excavated to mine high-quality building sand, while others suggest the sand was extracted for rebuilding London after the Great Fire of 1666
