Details

Compass is an 8-week series of discussions which will explore, and put into practice, the humanist values and virtues which underpin human happiness, resilience and flourishing. Exclusively designed and hosted by Dorset Humanists. Limited to 24 places which are now filling up fast! No essays or exams or prior knowledge needed! All you need is a curious mind about human life and its challenges.

Session One - The Human Quest
In a world where people talk endlessly about happiness, mental health, and social justice, we rarely stop to ask a deeper question: what does it mean to live a good life and to become a good person? Humanists don’t have commandments or divine authorities to fall back on, so where do our ethics come from? What do we mean when we talk about “humanist values”?

In this opening session of Compass, we’ll explore the foundations of humanist ethics with Aristotle as our guide. Writing in ancient Greece, Aristotle developed a vision of the good life based on character and virtue — an idea largely forgotten for centuries, but rediscovered in the 20th century as a compelling alternative to rule-based morality. What might this ancient wisdom, reborn in our own time, offer to humanists today?
