In the past, printing or logging of information from applications (possibly after enabling debugging) was sufficient for diagnosing many software problems. As applications have become more complex, and have evolved into collections of microservices, such techniques are rarely sufficient. Tracing methods are helpful for complex monolithic applications, but break down with microservice-based applications.

OpenTelemetry (https://opentelemetry.io/) is the leading open source solution for collecting distributed tracing information from distributed applications, and addresses the needs for understanding and debugging applications in the 21st century.

This talk will give a overview of observability and concepts in OpenTelemetry along with a live demonstration of a real-life application.
