# A Python and a Viking King - How Computer Stuff Got Named - Molly Painter
We use all sorts of strange words in the tech world, and you'd think they were all new words from the modern era, but surprisingly they aren't! You'd be astonished by just how many words we use in tech every day are actually older than the invention of computers themselves!
In this talk, Molly is going to tell you all sorts of strange stories from ancient history, popular culture and other very strange places to show you where it is the words we use in our work lives actually come from.
These include:
* How "bugs" have nothing to do with insects
* The curious connection between a viking warlord, a hollywood starlet and modern computer tech
" What is a hacker? And what does it have to do with horses?
* Why is a developer nothing at all like a fajita?
* What is a C and why is it sharp?
All this, and much, much. More!
Our Speaker:
Molly Painter:
Molly has been working as a .NET developer for over 20 years now in a variety of industries including government, retail and manufacturing. But she has been hacking around with computer code since she was old enough to read her Dad's copy of the ZX Spectrum BASIC coders manual.
She has been speaking about Functional C# at various user groups and conferences around the UK, USA, Europe and Australia and am particularly interested in seeing just how far we can push C# without breaking it.
In 2023 she released her first technical book: "Functional Programming with C#", published by O'Reilly Media.
When she is not coding, or running after her two small children, she has been known to enjoy the classic series of Doctor Who, Fighting Fantasy Gamebooks, Cryptic Crosswords, and rather more coffee than is probably good for her.
