Persuasion by Jane Austen

Details

If Pride and Prejudice is a book about "First Impressions" then her last novel, Persuasion, which was posthumously published, is a book about second chances, not just in love, but in life, too. Whether they are The Elliot Family of Kellynch Hall who must relocate to Bath or Sea-Faring Naval Officers, or former lovers - one of each - this novel has very romantic notions that even if life sends you in a direction which you did not intend, sometimes it gives you another shot at happiness. When Frederick Wentworth, now a wealthy Captain set on marriage, returns back to England, he is thrown back into the company of Anne Elliot, the sensible, overlooked daughter of Sir Walter, and the woman who rejected his proposal 7 years prior. They must contend with their own feelings and navigate being back in each others' worlds.

One of the main themes of this novel, is temperament of character. Austen has us wonder, should you make decisions based on honour and duty to family or act in self-interest for your own happiness? Should you be rigid and unmoving to yourself and your own beliefs or be more open to the 'persuasions' of others.

Please update your RSVP by Wednesday, December 10th, so we are able to tell the restaurant the exact number of attendees!
