DUDC February Meeting: Dr. Emmanuel Dugrenot from Divers Alert Network (DAN)
Details
Down Under Divers Club (DUDC) is the largest and longest running independent scuba club in North Carolina, and supports all local dive shops. The DUDC has a monthly meeting at Dave & Busters in Cary, with topics on some aspect of diving, travel, safety or our water environment. You do not have to be a member to come!
For our February meeting we are pleased to host Dr. Emmanuel Dugrenot, Senior Researcher at Divers Alert Network (DAN), for a dynamic and informative meeting you won’t want to miss!
Divers Alert Network (DAN) is a non-profit organization dedicated to diver safety and health, providing 24/7 emergency assistance, medical information, research, and training to prevent and manage diving injuries, primarily through membership and donations. Below is Dr. Emmanuel Dugrenot’s biography from the DAN website.
"After completing a master’s degree in molecular biology, Dr. Dugrenot worked as a dive instructor, specializing in technical and rebreather diving and earning an instructor trainer certification. Around that time, he also created and ran a company to develop improved decompression procedures, collaborating with engineers, mathematicians, and biologists. After several years working full time in the dive industry, Dr. Dugrenot completed a Ph.D. in Physiology at the University of Western Brittany (France) on genetic resistance to decompression sickness. It was only natural that he joined DAN in November 2022 to continue working on divers’ safety.
Dr. Dugrenot is also a visiting researcher in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and at the ORPHY laboratory at the University of Western Brittany. His research interests include Hypobaric Decompression Sickness (DCS) in space walks, and his work is supported by external funding sources such as the Office of Naval Research (ONR)."
We’ll gather starting at 6:30 PM so you have time to order food, drinks, and mingle with fellow divers. The meeting will officially begin at 7:15 PM with announcements, followed by the presentation from our guest speaker. We look forward to seeing you in person! If you can’t attend, don’t worry—you can still participate via Teams.
