Details

The Inaugural onsite DevOps Exchange New York City is here!

To mark the occasion we have a great line-up in store for you, including 3 of the biggest names in today's tech; Spotify, Microsoft and the ultimate tech giants, Google, who are also our hosts for the evening at their amazing office on Pier 57.

We'll be hearing about Spotifys new Developer platform, Backstage and how its the future of Developer experience. Microsoft will be giving us an insight into building Modern Microservices using Dapr and finally Google will be talking all things SLOs and highlighting the pitfalls that come with using them and ways to move forward.

This will be the DevOps Exchange New York City's first ever onsite event, in partnership with our good friends at the Google SRE NY Meetup group.

The event will open at 5:45pm and will consist of 3 x 20 minutes talks starting at 6:05pm. The full agenda is below, we have a set capacity for the evening so please RSVP as soon as you can.

Agenda:

Claire Casey and John Philip Software Engineers from Spotify
Backstage: The future of Developer Experience

Being a developer has never been harder – the number of tools, Microservices, and components that developers have to keep track of are exploding. In this talk, you’ll learn about Backstage, an open source framework for building developer portals, created at Spotify, donated to the CNCF, and adopted by almost a thousand companies. Learn more about the problems Backstage solves for and how it improves the developer experience.

Bios: Claire and John are both full stack engineers at Spotify based out of New York. John works on creating plugins for Backstage that let companies unlock learning opportunities and level up their employees. Claire works on the Spotify Plugins for Backstage bundle and plugin infrastructure, and can be found dabbling in open source as well!

Jason Specland - Cloud Solutions Architect from Microsoft.
Building Modern Microservices with Dapr

Designing Microservice apps for resiliency is hard. There are a million points of failure to worry about, and every microservice you add to your architecture introduces more of them. Weren't microservices supposed to make our lives easier?

Enter the Distributed Application Runtime, or Dapr. Dapr is an open source, language agnostic framework for building cloud-native applications informed by best practices. We'll explore how Dapr can help you build applications that can seamlessly rebound from failures, no matter what language you love or what cloud you live on.

Bio: Jason Specland is a Cloud Solution Architect for App Innovation at Microsoft, where he helps developers at other high-tech companies build and deploy their applications on the Azure Cloud. He has enjoyed a 30-year career in IT, where he's done many silly things like grabbing the backup tapes while escaping a burning building, writing a content management system in C++ on a SPARCstation, and using Perl.

He can be seen doing even sillier things as a performer at ComedySportz NYC and as one of the co-hosts of Improv Tonight at the QED Comedy Club in Astoria, Queens. He lives in Manhattan with his loving wife, his surly teenage son, and an even surlier cat.

Štěpán Davidovič - Senior Staff SRE from Google
Measuring Reliability: What Got Us Here Won't Get Us There

SLOs are all the rage nowadays, but they can also be misguiding and harmful in various surprisings ways. This talk will cover some of the pitfalls, and ways to move forward. SLOs might have been helpful for your reliability improvements, but what got you here might not get you much further.

Bio: Štěpán Davidovič is currently Senior Staff Engineer at Google, working in the office of the technical advisor to the CFO. Prior to that, he was an SRE for 11 years and worked -- among other things -- on building internal monitoring, gaining insights from reliability data, and automatic canarying. He obtained his BSc from Czech Technical University in Prague.

We look forward to seeing you on what looks a great night.

All the best,
