Description
For over sixty years, the U.S.S. Periton has served Starfleet—longer than most active-duty officers have been in uniform. Though she’s endured decades of change, she still bears the scars and triumphs of the Federation-Klingon War, surviving only thanks to her advanced shielding. Refit for scientific and survey operations, she now boasts upgraded sensor systems that have helped define deep-space exploration in ways the first human space explorers could not fathom. Countless new recruits and seasoned veterans have forged their identities aboard the storied Periton, and her bridge has seen the leadership of many captains. Now, a grizzled war veteran carries on that tradition as her latest commander.

The Periton’s next assignment is a Second Contact mission to the newly warp capable Aurane people of the Auraxis system—a vast system of eight planets within the Corona Borealis constellation. The Aurane, a human-like species, have built a society across several planets and moons. They actively mine an asteroid belt, while a nearby Interplanetary Gas Envelope—known locally as the 'Celestial Haze'—holds deep cultural significance. To some Aurane, the 'Celestial Haze' is sacred; to others, it remains a place of mystery and caution, as no probe or explorer has ever returned from its depths. Federation interest is driven by promising signals of a rare energy phenomenon—one that has the potential to unlock breakthroughs in energy field dynamics and lead to revolutionary advances in shielding and propulsion.

Recent Federation scans have detected signals suggesting that another warp-capable faction is already active within the gas envelope, whose motives and intentions are unknown. Though details remain minimal, these developments add an unexpected layer of risk, hinting at challenges that may further complicate our diplomatic mission.

In response to these uncertainties, our captain is calling on those among you who are both brave and skilled to join his crew. Beyond the diplomatic front, the mission demands explorers ready to venture into the depths of the 'Celestial Haze'—to probe its secrets, face whatever dangers lie within, and open up new possibilities for the future.
