What we’re about

Drawing New York is the largest art-making Meetup in the world! Make new friends while drawing together. We are a community of over 14,000 members who love to improve our drawings and paintings!

We are situated within the historic mansion of The National Arts Club, located on Gramercy Park South in Manhattan, New York. You do not need to be a club member to attend.

DNY helps people make "real and tangible progress" with their drawings, whether they are absolute beginners, intermediate sketchers, or professional artists.

We meet several times a week, in person and online to draw from a live model. We have both instructed and uninstructed classes.

Drawing New York hosts full-day workshops with exceptional drawing and painting teachers, presenting artist demonstrations and drawing competitions.

DNY also creates original content for museums and cultural institutions in New York City including The Morgan Library, The Museum of The City of New York, and The Museum of Arts and Design.

We hope this group provides a place to practice drawing and learn about exciting drawing sessions and exhibitions throughout New York.

    ### Introduction to Color – Still Life Painting - Oil Paint Included

Register here with a friend and get 10% off :)

Do you ever look at your surroundings and think: "These colors are magical! I wish I could translate them into a painting!" Two of the biggest challenges when painting from life can be depicting colors and values naturalistically. Much of painting is not only mixing an accurate color on your palette, but training your eye to judge relationships between colors and values successfully. In this course, we'll sharpen your perceptual abilities. We'll dive into the world of hue, value, and chroma, as well as palette organization, leveling up your painting game. Experience with drawing is recommended for this class, though beginner painters are welcome. Each session will include a lecture and demo by the instructor along with individual critiques. We will complete two paintings in this course – two sessions for each painting. Our goal is accurate and naturalistic color studies, rather than highly resolved paintings.

    • 4-session live oil painting course exploring color theory- Wednesdays- Nov 12, 19 and Dec 2 and 9
    • Master hue, value, and chroma through still life painting
    • Learn palette organization and color mixing techniques
    • Train your eye to judge color relationships accurately
    • Every class includes instructor demonstration
    • 3 hours of painting time with individual critiques
    • Open to all skill levels - beginners welcome

    Beyond Boundaries: Mapmaking
Even in the age of satellite images, GPS, and Google Maps, mapping remains a drawn act—raising questions of orientation, imagination, and belonging. This program explores maps – their making, their functions, and their repurposing – focusing on mapmaking as a hand-drawn delineation of place and boundaries, and how artists and scholars expand on mapmaking traditions to suggest new ways of seeing and placing ourselves.
From early hand-drawn maps to the tools and techniques that render mapmaking possible, from the juxtaposition of distinct histories of movement to the creation of new worlds, this panel brings together speakers with vastly different perspectives to reflect on the history of drawing maps and consider how mapping—past and present—shapes our understanding of place and invites us to draw it anew.
Presented in partnership with the Conservation Center, NYU IFA
