Drink and Draw: Dayton - Fashion is a Social Construct
Details
Concept art is one of my favorite art categories. It forces the artist to thing through how their subject would interact with their immediate surroundings and larger environment. A big part of character design, in live acted and animated shows, is deciding on the type of cloths, hair, accessories, etc. a given character would wear, and how those thing could enhance the characters interaction with an environment. How practical is their wardrobe choices, do they like jewelry, would the carry an umbrella or a rain coat? Are they the type of character that would lay an outfit around the rain coat (or build and outfit at all)?
Fashion is also reflects the culture it exists in to a degree, since as an artistic tradition, it is meant to enhance the beauty of some exclusive group or person. This used to just be geared more to formal ceremonies and traditions, but thanks to industrialization, it has become whoever can afford the clothing that designers image people can wear. Snarkiness aside, some fashion concepts are really cool, and can be used to communicate subtexts about the culture and subcultures the character is a part of.
For this event, I was just thinking we could try to do some simple clothing concept designs. They can be unconstrained, high art, or tied closely to an original character, or even a person you know. Fabric artists (knitting, crochet, tailoring, cross-stitch) are also very welcome, as those of us who do not understand cloth well (myself included) would appreciate your insights on illustrating the material properly.
