Reputation in the Modern Age

Details
It is clear that perception and reputation have always played a fundamental role in human society; it is an important determinant of power and status and underlies everything from gossip to mourning rituals to historical narratives. However, as society has and continues to undergo rapid change, so could reputation:
* How has the nature and significance of reputation changed with technological advancement, globalization, social media, and other downstream cultural effects? How does it continue to vary across cultures? How might it change with in the future, with the advent of AI deepfakes and the like?
* As it stands, do we as a society generally over- or undervalue reputation? What factors do versus should determine one's reputation? Is it necessary or ideal for one’s reputation to be uniformly “good”? How do these depend on context? And, as always, how do these relate to authenticity?
* Is it too easy or too difficult for both good and bad actors to manipulate the reputations of those around them? How should we protect against bad actors, especially as society changes?
