Coso Wilderness and surrounding area - Petroglyphs, F4 Phantom Site, Talc City
Details
I'm looking for a few good explorers!
Updated!
Getting another small group together for a weekend trip of exploration in the Coso Range and surrounding areas.
The Coso Range is situated within the borders of the Mojave Desert, offering stunning views of both the desert landscape and the distant Sierra Nevada mountains. Outdoor enthusiasts flock to the Coso Range for activities such as hiking, rock climbing, and wildlife viewing. The area is also rich in archaeological sites, with evidence of ancient Native American habitation, particularly from the Coso people, who left behind petroglyphs and artifacts that provide insight into their way of life.
Sites to explore will include:
U2 Joshua Tree site
Astro Artz Cabin
Upper Centennial Springs Petroglyph site
F4 Phantom Crash site
Boxcar Cabin
Star Wars/Rainbow Canyon
Blackrock Wells Petroglyph site
Talc City
Day 1:
- AM Meet up in Olancha
- Head out to visit U2 Joshua Tree site
- Continue to the Astro Artz Cabin and begin trail to search for the F4 Phantom crash site
- Continue trail to Upper Centennial Springs Petroglyph site
- Return back down trail and head for Box Car Cabin and find camp site
Day 2:
- Blackrock Well petroglyph site hike
- Drive to "Star Wars Canyon"
- Talc City exploration
- Find camp
Day 3:
- Return home
There are many other points of interest along the way, but my focus will be the two Petroglyph Sites. These two sites will require hiking to get to them. Please keep this in mind. Upper Centennial Springs can be driven to from what I understand, but the Blackrock Wells site will require a hike of a mile or two each way to get to, depending on the route we take.
YouTuber "storiesbyalex" has some nice videos showing the areas with the petroglyphs. To get an idea as to where we will be visiting, check them out at the links below:

We will meet up at Olancha at 9:00am Friday morning where we will gas up and discuss the plan for the weekend.
Please Note:
This will be a small group trip with two nights of off grid camping on BLM land with no services or amenities. Please keep this in mind. Plan and pack accordingly. You will need to provide your own food, water, means of cooking, shelter and toilet solutions for the duration of the trip. It is imperative that we follow "leave no trace" principles while on this trip.
All trails will require 4x4 high clearance vehicles. Every vehicle will need to be in good working order and must have recovery gear.
Be sure to leave yourself plenty of time to arrive safely and on time.
We will be monitoring the weather as the date gets closer. If conditions are deemed not safe, the date may be changed or cancelled.
Your RSVP will be for your rig, not for # of people. Whether there is 1 person or 10 in your rig, please just 1 RSVP.
By attending, you are agreeing to accept full liability for your own safety.
