About us
Welcome to DroidKernel — a meetup community for people who don’t just use Android, but want to understand it, build on it, and push it further.
I’m Yosuke (English name: John, nickname: Obsidian)— an Android developer and long-time Linux user. Over the past few years, my work and personal projects have been driven by one obsession: Android as a real, hackable, engineering playground. Android isn’t just an app platform — it’s a Linux-based system with layers worth exploring, from UI and APIs down to the “kernel-ish” side of how devices actually behave.
DroidKernel is an independent Android + Linux studio and project universe, built around practical learning, shipping real things, and sharing deep technical knowledge in a friendly, welcoming space. I also publish books about Android/Linux (rooting workflows, tooling, and hands-on labs), and this meetup is the community side of that mission: a place to learn together, build together, and level up.
### What DroidKernel meetups are like
Depending on the session, we’ll do things like:
- Android app development meetups (beginner → intermediate), with real-world patterns and workflows
- Workshops and mini-labs focused on Android internals (ADB, debugging, logs, system behavior, performance)
- Linux-for-Android developers topics (shell power, tooling, automation, dev environments)
- Rooting / custom ROM culture (responsibly) — discussed as learning and engineering, not shady hacking
- Occasional project nights where we build something together (apps, utilities, CLI tools, scripts)
### Who should join
You’re welcome here if you are:
- learning Android development from scratch
- already building apps and want a stronger foundation
- a Pixel/Android power user curious about the system under the hood
- a Linux user who wants to connect your skills to Android
- someone who simply loves Google’s OS and open-source tech culture
No elitism, no gatekeeping. If you’re curious and willing to learn, you belong here.
DroidKernel is where Android enthusiasts become builders — and builders become specialists.

DroidKernel Meetup: Android Power Users & Builders Hangout
Starbucks Coffee - Shibuya Stream, Shibuya City, Shibuya, 3-chōme−21−3 ストリーム 2F・3F, Tokyo, JPThis is an official meetup event hosted by DroidKernel — an indie Android app development studio.
Hi, I’m Yosuke (English name: John, nickname: Obsidian). I recently published a book on Amazon, “Android Linux on Pixel,” and I’d love to bring together people who enjoy Android and Linux — whether you’re a developer, a power user, a custom ROM explorer, or simply curious about what makes Android special.### What we’ll do (session flow)
- Quick intros
- Your Android device history: favorite phones, favorite eras, and what pulled you into Android/Linux.
- Share what you’re currently learning, building, or experimenting with.
- Experience exchange: Android & Linux in real life
- How do you use Android or Linux day-to-day?
- What tools, apps, workflows, or setups made a big difference for you?
- Open-source talk: why it’s so fascinating
- What does “open source” actually mean to you in practice?
- Where has openness helped you learn, customize, troubleshoot, or feel more in control?
- Discussion: what makes Android “Android”?
- The identity of Android: Linux base, AOSP, OEM layers, Google services, customization.
- What features or design choices make Android feel unique compared to other ecosystems?
- Android development chat (beginner-friendly)
- Have you ever built an Android app (professionally or as a hobby)?
- If not, what kind of app would you want to build?
- Share tips: first steps, learning resources, tools you like, struggles you’ve had.
- Rooting / bootloader / custom ROM stories (responsible & learning-focused)
- Have you ever unlocked a bootloader or installed a custom ROM? What was your experience?
- Have you rooted a phone and transformed it into something totally different?
- Best lessons learned: wins, fails, “never again,” and “I’d do it differently next time.”
- Favorite Android “flavors” showdown
- Which is your favorite Android skin or ROM?
- Corporate skins: One UI, ColorOS, OxygenOS, Nothing OS, etc.
- Custom ROMs: LineageOS, Pixel Experience, and more.
- Why that choice? UI polish, performance, updates, customization, stability, or philosophy?
- Wrap-up: community direction
- What topics should we do next? (e.g., ADB basics, Android internals, app dev mini-workshops, Pixel-focused sessions, Linux tooling for Android devs)
- Optional: share links/resources, GitHub repos, apps, blogs, or favorite projects.
This meetup is meant to be friendly, nerdy, and open to all levels. Whether you’re here to talk, learn, or just listen, you’re welcome.
