Please join us at BlackMesh in Ashburn for our monthly meetup with a presentation by Cathy Theys: Business Applications of Lessons Learned from Drupal Core Mentoring.
If you've been to a DrupalCon, you've probably run across Cathy organizing mentors and code sprints. For her contributions to moving Drupal and its community forward, she recently was awarded the inaugural Aaron Winborn award (https://assoc.drupal.org/blog/holly.ross.drupal/cathy-theys-inaugural-aaron-winborn-award-winner). In her talk, she will discuss what makes a successful mentoring experience, based on her involvement with Drupal Core Mentoring.
Drupal Core Mentoring has become immensely popular since the idea of online office hours first came about in July 2011. Soon after, mentoring at Drupal events started happening first at DrupalCon Denver, then DrupalCon Munich in 2012. To ease new contributors into the Drupal contribution workflow, every DrupalCon since then has included Core Mentored Sprints and First Time Sprinter Workshops. We will discuss how businesses can apply the key principles used in Drupal Core Mentoring:
• starting small
• talking in "public"
• asking questions
• breaking down problems
• feedback - giving and taking
• working together
• moving on
If you are thinking of starting mentoring in your organization, or already have a mentoring structure in place, this is a meetup for you!
Our regular NoVA meetup is the third Tuesday of every month - typically rotating between ICF and Bixal in Fairfax, although this meetup will be at BlackMesh (http://www.blackmesh.com/contact) in Ashburn:
