A compelling case for being a social data scientist

Details

Please join us for our next Meetup on Wednesday July 27, hear about why it is important to be social as a data scientist and socialize with your fellow members over pizza and beer. The event is sponsored by and will be hosted at McGraw-Hill Education. Summary:

Lalitha Agnihotri is a senior data scientist at McGraw-Hill Education. Prior to McGraw-Hill she was a Senior Researcher at Philips where she authored and contributed to 50 publications in areas of machine learning and data analysis and more than 30 awarded patents. In this session, she will present a compelling case of why being a data scientist with really good social skills is important.

While most job descriptions for data science positions are heavily focused on technical skills and advanced degrees, the importance of the social aspect of this job is rarely emphasized. In her talk, Lalitha will present the work she did at New York Institute of Technology to create a product to improve students' retention rate.  She will discuss the challenges that a data scientist faces when using data to create a product and importance of a finished product and a good user interface design in data science field and how to "cover" up technology so that the users do not feel intimidated while using it!
