CHI-KA and HAIYATEA invite you to an
intimate afternoon talk with Takanao Todo -
a multi-award-winning Japanese architectural
designer, ceramicist, tea cultural consultant,
and educator.
Todo graduated from the Architectural
Association School of Architecture in London
in 2008. Following his studies he trained and
worked across the world, developing a
multidisciplinary practice that integrates
architecture, design and cultural storytelling.
At the core of his practice is a search for new
expressions within the aesthetics of the
Japanese tea ceremony. Reinterpreting
centuries of tradition, Todo extends Japanese
tea culture beyond the borders of Japan,
examining how tea design can evolve across
cultures while preserving its contemplative
essence. Through what he describes as a
Post-Wabi sensibility, he proposes a
contemporary language of beauty — one that
honours the spirit of wabi while expanding its
material and conceptual possibilities.
