And Now For Something Completely Different...

Details
After a long and unfortunately hiatus since the end of 2023, Dublin Data Science is back for the autumn! We have been looking forward to hosting events in person again, and we are back with a talk from Mick, one of our organisers, talking about analysing probabilities of gaming systems, specifically Dungeons and Dragons (D&D).
D&D was first released in the mid-1970s as an offshoot of the tabletop wargaming hobby, and has had its ups and downs since then. It's rules system is more complex than most modern role-playing games, and Fifth Edition (2014) introduced the concept of Advantage and Disadvantage, which provides some interesting behaviour from a probabilistic perspective.
In this talk, we discuss and analyse the consequences of having Advantage and Disadvantage in D&D and how non-linearity is not your friend when it comes to human intuition.
We are deeply grateful to Rory and Joe from Dogpatch Labs for the use of their venue and we hope to see you all back in person on the night.
