Real-Time Retail: How we're revolutionising personalisation with Apache Kafka® and Apache Flink®

Abstract:
At Rue Gilt Groupe (RGG), we're transforming our e-commerce experience by harnessing real-time customer interactions and community trends. Our home page, personalised for each member, is a critical starting point for our main customer journey. Currently, this data is only updated once a day through an offline batch process. We're now leveraging Apache Kafka® and Apache Flink® on Confluent Cloud to bring our personalisation game to the next level. Join us as we share our journey of real-time analytics, community-driven insights, and how these innovations are enhancing our members' shopping experiences.

💡 Speaker Two:
Mehreen Tahir, Software Engineer, New Relic

Title of Talk:
Observing all the things: Apache Kafka® and Apache Flink® with OpenTelemetry

Abstract:
This session explores how OpenTelemetry can be used to enhance observability for Apache Kafka and Apache Flink. We will cover practical demonstrations of using OpenTelemetry to trace Kafka's producer and consumer workflows, capture Kafka broker metrics using JMX, and extend this visibility to managed Kafka services like Confluent Cloud. Additionally, the session will highlight how OpenTelemetry’s integration with Apache Flink provides end-to-end observability into real-time data stream processing. Attendees will learn how to instrument their applications for better monitoring and faster incident resolution using open standards, enabling more transparent, interoperable, and efficient telemetry collection.

Bio:
Mehreen Tahir is a Software Engineer at New Relic. She specializes in machine learning, data science, and artificial intelligence. Mehreen is passionate about observability and the use of telemetry data to improve application performance. She actively contributes to developer communities and has a keen interest in edge analytics and serverless architecture.
