Self-service ingress provisioning with Kubernetes - Rob Mason, Workday
All too often application teams launching new services run into friction in getting their service out to users. Their desire to iterate rapidly is encumbered by slow or manual process in getting the last mile of network presentation delivered for their project.
Platform teams do not deliberately get in the way but often do not have the tools to work at the same iteration speed as the application teams.
That’s why we built a new self service ingress provisioning process for our teams, leveraging the Kubernetes operator paradigm, Istio, Cert-Manager and Kubernetes eco-system projects like external-dns and aws-load-balancer-controller.
Our talk will cover how we automatically provision zones and network load balancers, generate certificates and create DNS records based on NLB metadata and Istio virtual services, all triggered by gitops provisioning of resource definitions provided by application teams.
We will talk about the technologies we used and the controls we implemented.
We will cover technologies such as: External DNS, Kubernetes AWS Loadbalancer Controller, CertManager, Open Policy Agent Gatekeeper, Istio, Prow
