Details

With Windows 10 losing support from Microsoft in October 2025 we felt it was a great opportunity to keep perfectly good computers supported with a modern operating system with security updates and new features into the future.

Are you brand new to Linux? Are you curious how it would run as a operating system as an alternative to Windows or Mac OS? Well, here is your chance to bring a laptop and install it with the guidance of a community of people who have gone through the steps and could help answer your questions. We are also a friendly community who regularly help each other out with questions. Join our Matrix (details on our website, https://dublinlinux.org ).

TOG Hackerspace have kindly agreed to be the venue for this event. They are a cool craft/hardware hacking space, and we would highly suggest that you consider attending more of their events or even becoming a member.

Notice for attendees

  • We are all volunteers and will be donating our free time and knowledge for those interested in trying Linux out.
  • We aren't responsible for backing up your data, please have it backed up beforehand. It is likely that the storage drive will be wiped during installation
  • We will be targeting a beginner-friendly Linux distro eg Zorin OS or Linux Mint. If you have a request for a specific distro (like Fedora, Open Suse, Arch etc) we will try to help you, but it isn't the primary goal of the event.
  • if you have additional questions we will try to assist but be mindful that the person helping you may need to help others
  • it would be a great help if you could inform us of your familiarity with installing Linux. Our priorities will be focused on helping brand-new people first
  • If you have in depth technical questions, eg "I am having issues with my Nvidia card drivers could you help troubleshoot?" please bear in mind that this is focused as an install fest, not a drop in tech help desk. You are welcome to join our matrix group and ask the question there
  • The most likely to work will be non-Apple hardware
  • Any support we will give will be "best efforts"
  • We will have at least one Windows install USB on us if you would want us to revert on the day.
