The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir presumptive to the throne of Austria-Hungary and his wife Sophie, the Duchess of Hohenberg, in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914 is the act that led to the outbreak of the First World War. In his presentation, ‘Assassination at Sarajevo’ Gerry White looks at the background to the assassination, the assassins, the deed, and the aftermath.

Gerry White is a military historian, retired member of the Irish Defence Forces, and the Island of Ireland Trustee of the Western Front Association. During the Decade of Centenaries, he helped to curate the exhibitions on the First World War and Irish Revolution that were displayed in Cork Public Museum. In 2015 he delivered the eulogy at the state funeral of Commandant Thomas Kent, and in 2016 he spoke at the Thiepval Memorial on the centenary commemoration of the Battle of the Somme. His publications include The Irish Volunteer Soldier 1913-1916 (Osprey UK, 2003) and *A Great Sacrifice- Cork Servicemen who died in the Great War (*Evening Echo Publications 2010).
