Our talks and speakers this month:

First Talk: Scaling applications with CQRS

Build it and they will come but when they do, your application grinds to a halt. Too often scalability requirements are an after-thought and quite often the choice of database appears to be a limiting factor. In this talk we'll look at different ways to apply the CQRS pattern when you're faced with the challenge of scaling your existing application. Examples will be in .NET using C# although the principles are technology agnostic.

Naeem is an independent Software Engineer & Architect currently working on distributed systems in healthcare. Over the past few years his particular interests lie in using domain-driven design and event-driven architectures to deliver complicated and scalable solutions. At other times you'll find him riding horses, firing arrows, and sometimes both at the same time.

Second Talk: Event-driven Microservices

In this talk, I will describe the evolution of the HBC architecture from a big monolith to microservices with streams. During this journey, we have seen different data usage patterns that lead us to rethink how to handle data between services.

The presentation explains the reasons we picked Kafka as Streaming Hub and the use of Kafka Streams to avoid common anti-patterns, streamline development experience, improve resilience, enhance performances and enable experimentation. A step-by-step example will be presented to introduce the Kafka Stream DSL and understand what happens under the hood of a stateful streaming application.
