Shaped by History: Exploring How History is Creating Our Future

Details

Hello TEDheads,

Happy Autumn!

It's said if we don't learn from history we're destined to repeat it. This is usually said with a pessimistic bias, but what can we learn from history that we want to repeat?

Can history help us predict the future? What parts of history inform our worldview and biases?

A social worker once told me, "every behaviour makes sense given enough enough history".

I'm excited to learn from you and understand a bit more what history shapes you today and what history you want to shape you tomorrow.

Please watch the following 2 talks on your own device BEFORE the event. Have a watch, compare the videos, and bring insights and questions along to the conversation.

# ★ Talk #1: Lessons from history for a better future

How can the lessons of the past help us navigate the turbulence of the present and future? Social philosopher Roman Krznaric explores why history isn’t just a record of what’s gone wrong — it’s also full of solutions, resilience and radical hope. From Edo Japan’s circular economy to the peaceful coexistence of cultures in medieval Spain, he reveals why looking backward can actually help us move forward.

# ★ Talk # 2: Why History Matters

Most students find boredom in between the pages of a history textbook, but why is it so essential to learn? Hear this history professor explain how history is not as ancient as it feels, and why it is so relevant today.
