Hello TED-heads,

Sometimes it's hard to know who I'm responsible to care for. It's overwhelming to think of all the people that need help in the world and it's easier to shrink my borders of care so I don't feel shame for not doing more. I don't think this is the who I want to be though. What about you?

Am I only responsible for me and my family? What about my friends or community? What about those who have immigrated here or those who are in other countries? What are the boundaries of care?

What if care for others comes at a cost to myself or my family? Should I still do it?

These are all questions we seek to find answers to and depending on who you're listening to or what you've been through in your life you'll arrive at varying conclusions.

I'm genuinely interested to hear your thoughts on this topic and grow in my own understanding. I hope you can join

If you have the ability, watch the TED talk. If not we'll do a quick synopsis before we start on Wednesday.

# ★ How to let altruism be your guide

What is altruism? Put simply, it's the wish that other people may be happy. And, says Matthieu Ricard, a happiness researcher and a Buddhist monk, altruism is also a great lens for making decisions, both for the short and long term, in work and in life.
