A Daytime Tour of Nighttown: a walk through Episodes 15 and 16 of Ulysses

Episode 15, “Circe”, is the hallucinatory world which is the climax of the novel.
Episode 16, “Eumaeus”, is the beginning of the homecoming of our hero.

The setting for these episodes gives us the opportunity to explore the area once called Monto.

The Joyce family moved to nearby Fitzgibbon Street in 1893. James fascination with the area “with its vastness and strangeness of life” would ultimately lead him to the Red Light District known as The Monto or The Kips.

The walk will explore the history of Monto and the locations of the Ulysses narrative within it. We will follow in Bloom and Stephen’s footsteps at the end of their long day.

The walk will start near The Spire and finish beside the Custom House.
