World Building Workshop

Details

A two part workshop for children aged 6-7, focused on the power of storytelling and building an imaginary city.

Autumn Term 2025
Halfterm
Monday 27th AND Tuesday 28th October 2025
2.00pm-4.30pm

Monday 27th, Session One
We will introduce the children and sit in a circle, asking the group questions about what their ideal city looks like.
What would the streets be made of? What would the smells be? What animals would be roaming? How would people say hello to each other?
From this exercise we will construct a poem to lead us through the workshop. Purdey will then teach the group how to make a basic painting palette including how to mix secondary colours.
At 3:30 there will be a break for biscuits and squash for 15 minutes. The children will start to map out their imagined world on scrolls of paper covering the floor and wall. They will be encouraged to use imagery from the poem, thinking about what corner of this land they would habit.

Tuesday 28th, Session Two
In the second part we will bring the children’s visions of the city into the three dimensional world.
We will use repurposed materials such as cardboard boxes, tubes, paper and egg cartons to construct the body of this city. Children will have access to masking tape, duck tape and pritt stick to assemble the structure. Once the structure is solid we will focus on bringing texture and life to it. We will use natural materials such as wool and moss as well as glitter and tissue to create depth.

At 4pm we will break for biscuits and squash followed by a group performance of the poem written in Session 1, before the city they have built.
