MEC Ottawa Road Cycling Meet-Up
Details
Hey everyone!
Come join us for our weekly Road Cycling Meet-Up! All groups will start and finish from MEC Ottawa at 366 Richmond Road – meet in the parking lot at the back of the store. Be ready to roll for 8:00 am! For the first few weeks we will tailor the route according to the level of the group but the distance will range from 20 to 60 km. Our best route options are to the west of the store toward Carp or to the north into Gatineau Park.
If the numbers allow we will divide the group into one ‘fast’ group and other slower groups. For the fast group the pace will not be regulated and riders might be dropped. If you ride with the fast group you must be an experienced and confident rider. You must also be familiar with the route.
For those not riding with the fast group the pace will be regulated according to the ability and experience of the group. You must however be able to ro ride at a minimum of 20 km/h for 1.5 hours. Having a road specific bike is strongly encouraged. Hybrids, mountain bikes, recumbants etc. will have a very difficult time holding the pace. If this group gets spread out after a challenging section then the leaders will slow or even stop to allow the other riders to catch up. These re-groups will occur whenever needed and no rider will be dropped.
Safety is a primary concern for any of our rides. Riders must obey all traffic regulations. There are different regulations for riding in Ontario, Quebec and on NCC property. It is your responsibility to know and obey the rules of the road. Riders will stop at all red lights and stop signs. The group must stay to the right as much as possible to allow car traffic to pass safely (two-abreast riding is expressly prohibited in Quebec and on NCC property, in Ontario the law is vague). Crossing the yellow line is strictly forbidden. Helmets must always be worn.
The group ride is unsupported. Participants should come with their bicycles in good working order but also be prepared with equipment to fix minor mechanicals such as flat tires. It is also strongly recommended to bring a mobile phone, some cash and your health card in case of emergency. If an emergency does occur 911 will be called and those in need of aid will be taken by ambulance to the nearest available medical facility.
Participants are required to sign a waiver in order to participate in any MEC Meet-Up. Waivers will be on site so give yourself a few minutes to fill one out if you have not done so already.
