Join us in this exciting seminar from Dave Fitzsimmons as he highlights the best features of photographing Unique creatures. Following the seminar will be a Gallery Opening Reception. SEMINAR 6:00pm-7:00pm: Sigma Pro photographer Dave FitzSimmons, as part of the opening reception on March 9th 2012 to the “Curious Critters: Animal Portraits from the Beautiful to the Bizarre" exhibit, will show a collection of images from his recent projects, including producing yearly calendar landscapes and pursuing new directions in impressionism. Dave will share wonderful waterfalls, amazing macro, and add commentary on the "Curious Critters" exhibit. After the seminar, please feel free to stay for the Dave Fitzsimmons Opening Gallery Reception.
Curious Critters: Animal Portraits from the Beautiful to the Bizarre

Most wild animals are photographed in situ, showing logs and leaves, meadows and mountains, whatever is in their natural habitats. In the Curious Critters series, I isolate often-overlooked animals against white backgrounds to eliminate distractions, allowing viewers to pay complete attention to animals’ shapes, colors, textures, and postures, not to mention apparent “expressions.” Richard Avedon, who made white backgrounds famous for portraiture, believed that, while a black background represents something, white is complete absence. If so, such high key photography leaves only the subject to be contemplated.
Removing an animals from its wild setting seems to make it more approachable; shooting from eye level puts us and the subject on the same plane. The goal of the Curious Critters series is an affective response: I want viewers to be moved by some aspect of these animals. Then I hope that you are moved to action, to appreciate and then conserve the natural world.
All animals in this exhibit have been handled carefully, not sedated, and returned safely to their habitats.

Dave FitzSimmons is a free-lance photographer and writer as well as a professor at Ashland University. Dave photographs and writes for various magazines, including Popular Photographyand Shutterbug. He currently is at work on a handful of books, including Animals of Ohio’s Ponds and Vernal Pools (Kent State UP, May 2011). Dave’s calendar credits include numerous titles by BrownTrout and Barnes & Noble.
One of six Sigma Pro photographers in North America, Dave presents seminars and workshops across North America. His works have been exhibited at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute and the National Center for Nature Photography, among other venues. He is assisted in his natural history endeavors by his wife, Olivia, and his two daughters, Sarah and Phoebe.
