Friendly Functional Programming - A look at Haskell

Details

At our first meeting we will look at the programming language Haskell. Haskell is a statically typed, purely functional language that is used in industry but also very popular for academic research in programming language design.

Our meetup is oriented towards beginners in functional programming, but if you already know Haskell or a related language you are very welcome to join and maybe show your work in the free hacking session in the second half of the meetup.

In the first half, we will have two talks of about half an hour each. In the first one Daniel (@danyx23) and Fredrik (@quesebifurcan) will introduce Haskell and give a big picture overview of the language. In the second talk Eric (@etorreborre) will talk about the things Haskell taught us while they where not looking which deals with the (hidden) influence of Haskell and functional programming on other languages.

After these two talks we will have an hour of free hacking with Haskell in small groups. You can try Haskell in a web browser during the meetup but if you want to get the most out of it we recommend that you install the Haskell environment manager Stack on your laptop and see if you are able to create and run the hello world example with stack (see the quick start guide: https://docs.haskellstack.org/en/stable/README/). We are not sure how good the Wifi will be, so please try to install Stack and do an initial build of the hello world before the meetup at a good internet connection :).

Doors open at 18:30, talks start at 19:00. We will wrap up around 21:00. The office is on the ground floor, you can see inside from the street.

We want this to be an inclusive learning environment and thus follow the Berlin Code of Conduct (https://berlincodeofconduct.org/). If you have any questions beforehand, please get in touch. We're very much looking forward to seeing you!
