The War of Art: Beyond Resistance
Week 1 — The Life We’re Avoiding
What would your life look like if fear weren’t making so many of your decisions?
We all have things we want to experience, create, express, or pursue, yet something holds us back. Sometimes it’s fear of failure, rejection, judgment, or uncertainty. Other times, resistance appears as procrastination, perfectionism, self-doubt, or the familiar comfort of staying where we are.
Inspired by Steven Pressfield’s The War of Art, this gathering is the first in an 8-week personal growth workshop exploring the deeper fears, beliefs, and patterns that keep us from living more fully.
Rather than focusing solely on productivity or discipline, we’ll approach resistance with curiosity and self-compassion. Our goal isn’t to eliminate fear but to better understand it and discover how to move forward even when it is present.
For our first meeting, we’ll explore:
- What does resistance look like in our everyday lives?
- What experiences or aspirations have we been putting off?
- What are we afraid might happen if we pursue what we want?
- How might our lives change if we became more willing to embrace uncertainty and vulnerability?
What to expect:
We’ll begin with an informal discussion of Book One of The War of Art, followed by guided reflection, journaling, and group conversation.
You’ll also have an opportunity to identify an area of your life you’d like to explore throughout the workshop.
Before we meet:
Please read Book One: Resistance — Defining the Enemy and consider one question:
What is something I’ve been wanting to do, experience, or express but keep postponing?
Bring a journal or notebook if you’d like.
About the series:
We’ll meet every other week for four sessions over eight weeks. Each gathering will explore a different aspect of resistance, self-discovery, vulnerability, and personal growth.
No prior experience with personal development workshops is necessary. Come with an open mind, curiosity, and a willingness to reflect. Sharing is always optional.
This is a space for thoughtful conversation, meaningful connection, and exploring what it means to live with greater courage and authenticity.
